QCTO SHIELDED METAL ARC WELDER (SMAW)


Purpose:
The Shielded Metal Arc Welder (SMAW) program aims to equip learners with the skills and knowledge necessary to perform welding tasks using the shielded metal arc welding technique. This qualification ensures that learners are proficient in creating strong and reliable welds, adhering to safety standards and industry requirements.


Entry Level Requirements:
Grade 9 or equivalent
Basic understanding of mathematics and physical science Physical fitness and good hand-eye coordination
Basic literacy and numeracy skills

Skills Obtained:
1. Proficiency in SMAW techniques, including setting up welding equipment and selecting appropriate electrodes.
2. Ability to perform welds on various metals, such as carbon steel, stainless steel, and cast iron.
3. Skills in reading and interpreting welding blueprints and technical drawings.
4. Knowledge of welding safety protocols and practices to prevent accidents and ensure workplace safety.
5. Understanding of weld quality standards and ability to inspect and assess welds for defects.
6. Basic maintenance and troubleshooting of welding equipment.
