ARPL assessment at FDT

ARPL Process

Turn your years of trade experience into a nationally recognised artisan qualification.

How ARPL Works

The ARPL (Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning) process in South Africa is designed to formally recognise the skills and experience of individuals who have been working in a trade but do not have formal qualifications. It allows these workers to gain a nationally recognised artisan qualification without having to start from scratch in a formal training program. Here's an overview of the ARPL process:

01

Eligibility Assessment

Experience

Candidates typically need several years of work experience in the trade they wish to be recognised in; this experience must be relevant to the specific trade.

Portfolio of Evidence

Candidates may be required to compile a portfolio that demonstrates their practical skills and knowledge. This portfolio includes documents like work records, references from employers, and examples of completed work.

02

Gap Analysis

Skills Evaluation

The candidate's existing skills and knowledge are assessed against the requirements of the national qualification for their trade, including both practical assessments and theoretical knowledge tests.

Identifying Gaps

If any gaps in knowledge or skills are identified, the candidate may need additional training to address them.

03

Preparation for Assessment

Training (if required)

Candidates may need to attend short courses or workshops to fill identified gaps and become ready for the final assessment.

Practice Assessments

Some candidates may have the opportunity to take practice assessments to familiarise themselves with the process.

04

Final Assessment

Trade Test

The candidate undergoes a formal trade test, the final assessment of their skills and knowledge, conducted by an accredited trade test centre such as FDT, including both practical and theoretical components.

Competency Evaluation

The candidate must demonstrate competency in all areas required for the qualification.

05

Certification

Qualification Awarded

If the candidate passes the trade test, they are awarded a nationally recognised artisan qualification, certifying them as competent in their trade (official Red Seal trade test certification).

Registration

The candidate may be registered with the relevant professional body or authority, depending on the trade.

Submitting an enquiry does not confirm ARPL or Trade Test eligibility. Your documents and work experience must first be reviewed by the relevant FDT assessment team.
